Bright on a Budget

The goods:
• denim shirt from Banana Republic

• fuchsia sweater and black pants from Forever21
• tan pumps from Aldo
• necklaces from Vintage Underground and Forever21
• silver bangle from Barneys
• vintage men's watch

In an attempt to stay true to one of my 2012 resolutions, I'm sporting color today. Another frugal, Forever21 find, this bright fuchsia sweater was only $13, and the cropped cut of soft warm fabric makes it a great layering piece. I was this close to throwing on a neutral sweater, but I figured a mid-winter "heatwave" in Chicago calls for a more festive frock.

Shop: Nadeau on Ravenswood

I took in a bunch of beautiful inspirations for my upcoming nuptials at Indie Wed this weekend, which took place at the Ravenswood Event Center. While I was up that way, I stopped a few doors down into one of my favorite affordable furniture spots in Chicago, Nadeau.

What lies inside this warehouse can only be described as a treasure trove of fine furnishings. Piled high are amazing, solid wood imports from across the globe ... all priced far below what you'd expect for the gorgeous goods. Everything they carry is high-quality, very unique, and sure to add a pop to any space. Some highlights for the home are pictured below ...

The goods:
• gray t-shirt from American Apparel

• metallic striped jacket from Zara
• jeans from Forever21
• black pumps from Aldo
• bangles from Forever21 and IGWT
• vintage heirloom pearl earrings

I spotted this blazer at Zara months ago and instantly loved the unique metallic pattern, tuxedo lapel, and gold details. I tried it on a few times but couldn't justify the relatively high price tag when I knew it would eventually drop. Sure enough, day after Christmas there it was, just my size and marked down to $59. I snapped it up and can wear it well knowing that my patience paid off.

Classic and Clean

Beth Nelson

The goods:
• white blouse from Zara

• black fauz sherling vest from Forever 21
• black denim by J Brand
• black and leopard wedges by Vince Camuto
• disk earrings from Valentina, Winnetka
• leopard ring from Topshop
• initial necklace from Stitch
• gold bangle by IGWT

If I had to make a list of women's wear staples, the white blouse would definitely make the top 5. Vintage or new, $20 or $200, this versatile piece can go with any style outfit. I wore this Salvation Army score earlier this week to show off a statement necklace, a Forever 21 find for a casual look, this delicate blouse under a blazer, and an amazing vintage piece for a menswear inspired look. Since it's a timeless classic, I consider it a shame to pass up a good blouse when I find it (so really, I'm obligated to buy it, right?).

Indie Wed Weekend

This weekend marks another wonderful wedding event. Indie Wed is a show and marketplace, put on by local vendors who specialize in tasty treats, bridal fashions, cocktails, tunes, and more. I'm looking forward to checking out the amazing work of Studio 272 (just try to watch one of his incredible wedding videos without getting chills), noshing on some Pure Kitchen Catering, and adding to my already extensive collection of wedding inspiration.

Below is just a fraction of my stockpile, inspired by the always lovely city of light  ...

Patterned Pair

The goods:
• white tshirt from American Apparel

• green zip pants from Anthropologie
• black blazer from BCBG
• patterned wedge from Forever 21
• men's vintage watch
• tan studded belt from J.Crew
• necklaces from UO and Stitch

Anyone who sees my closet may argue that the last thing I need (or can squeeze in) is one more pair of shoes ... but passing up a pretty pair is like passing on pure happiness. What makes it even easier is a pretty price tag! These wedges were only $24 at Forever 21. They're actually really comfortable and I love the tribal pattern on the wedge. So long as bargain beauties like these keep coming my way, I will keep making room in that packed closet of mine.

Making a Statement

One of my favorite accessories right now is a good, chunky statement necklace (like this piece I wore earlier this week). Adding one (or more) instantly upgrades a simple outfit to an engaging ensemble. Below are some fantastic (and mostly wallet friendly) jewels to elevate any look ...

The neck-adorning goods:
1. Chevron gold choker – $20, available on Nasty Gal

2. Black and white resin and pearl necklace – $60, available on Shopbop

3. Metallic fan necklace – $198, available at Anthropolgie

4. Hammered gold geo necklace – $8.80, available at Forever 21

5. Turquoise and gold necklace – $8.80, available at Forever 21

6. Stone and rope necklace – $38, available at Anthropologie

7. Neon chain necklace – $144, available on Shopbop

8. Beaded chain fringe necklace – $8.80, available at Forever 21

9. Resin and gold disc necklace – $158, available at Kate Spade

10. Faux tortoise choker – $14.80, available at Forever 21

11. Wooden bead necklace – $84, available on Shopbop

12. Embossed collar necklace – $42, available on Mikkat Market

Luxurious Layer

cashmere sweater

The goods:
• gray sweatshirt by Obesity and Speed

• white top from Banana Republic
• black pants from Forever 21
• faux fur vest from Von Maur
• booties by Vince Camuto
• black and gold ring from Lori's Shoes

Since it's not quite freezing enough to wear my giant down coat, but not nice enough to don a casual jacket, I've been resorting to layers for insulation. This vest is perfect for keeping warm under my coat (and fending off the office chill). And while I have been loving the statement necklace as of late, this vest is one all it's own ... too many statements and the look becomes more of a loud announcement.

That's a Wrap

Beth Nelson

Chicago Style

cashmere sweater

The goods:
• studded top from Banana Republic

• wrap style maxi skirt from UO
• plum tights from Forever21
• wedge booties from Nine West
• tassel necklace from Forever21, vintage gold chain from Vintage Underground
• bangles from IGWT, J.Crew
• vintage B ring from rummage sale

The layered look isn't just reserved for tops and jackets ... this wrap style skirt allows for a variety of combinations. I picked up this skirt for just $9 on the sale rack at Urban Outfitters, and instantly thought of multiple ways I could style it. I could play it safe with black tights, but instead I picked up a bunch of wintry hues to wear for a hint of color. I also see wearing it barelegged and with a sequin top for a more formal affair. My rule of thumb is if I can easily imagine myself wearing an item in more than one scenario, don't pass on it ... it's always those random, bargain finds that end up being my most versatile pieces.

Palm Trees and Passion Fruit

Our trip to Florida was short (too short), but Chicago is kind enough to greet us with some mild winter temps. We spent our days there lounging poolside, strolling to nearby markets and restaurants to take in all the amazing fresh seafood and tropical fruit we could.

Below are a few of my favorites from the trip ...

Florida
Poolside palms offered afternoon relief from the incredible Florida sun

Florida
Key lime margarita, a perfect lunch libation

Florida
Lobster pots outside Key Largo Fishery, where fantastic fresh catch is served daily

Beth Nelson
My daily breakfast of berries, papaya, guava, starfruit and passion fruit

Beth Nelson
Coconuts on the property made for tasty treats each afternoon!

I couldn't resist taking a piece of Florida home with me and returned with a dozen delicious passion fruits to help ease me back into this Chicago winter ... it's times like these I ask myself why we don't live in warm weather.

Fringe Benefits

• vintage white blouse from Salvation Army

• black denim by J Brand
• black pumps from Aldo
• fringe necklace and bangles from Forever21

When it comes to my wardrobe, I tend to keep it pretty classic – I find I can get the most mileage out of clean, simple pieces. But like any lover of fashion, I can't resist a fun new trend. I'm loving statement necklaces right now, and this one certainly is. But at $8, this trend won't break the bank (and leaves funds for the next fun find).

Bathing Beauties

While I was preparing for my jaunt to Florida this weekend, I was reminded of these gorgeous, vintage bathing beauties I spotted a while back. These photos were shot by Tom Palumbo, a fashion and celebrity photographer who shot for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue in the 50's and 60's. His portfolio runs the gamut – from fashion shoots in downtown Manhattan to haunting portraits of a young Mia Farrow. But it's his beach fashion shoots that I love most, with the amazing accessories and incredible use of light and color.

Let's pretend, for a moment, that it's not mid-January in Chicago and we're on a beach somewhere ... (okay, you pretend and I'll get back to my Floridian vaca)

The Budget Bride

Since my fiance and I have started planning our wedding, I've become aware of all of the fun events for brides to be in the city ... and this weekend is no exception.

Below are three events that I wish I could attend (but I'll take my beach vacation any day!)

Chicago Bride

The Sunshine State

vintage postcard

Steve and I are off to the Florida Keys for a long weekend with some friends! Since it seems this frigid weather is here to stay, nothing sounds better than a hot, sunny beach. I try to fit a beach vacation in every year, and while the scenery changes, my travel staples don't.

Below are items that I don't leave for the airport without ...

The Floridian goods:
1. Facial Cleansing Wipes. Yes to Cucumber On the Go Facial Wipes are natural, organic cucumber and aloe wipes are great for cleaning off after surf and sand. Bonus, they're also soothing – you know, just in case I get a little too much sun – $2.99, available here

2. A Light and Airy Cover-up. I won't put up with a sunburn like I did when I was younger (and dumber). Cover-ups are perfect for looking cool {and keeping skin safe} in the hot sun. This amazing piece is inspired by 1960s and 70s vintage Indian tunics – $188, available from EmersonMade

3. Adorable (and forgiving) Swimsuit. I haven't sworn off the bikini, but I just love the retro look of this ruched halter swinsuit – $29.94, available at Old Navy

4. Some serious sunblock. I've accepted the fact that I'm too fair to ever achieve a tropical tan, and now pile this stuff on non-stop. I love the lightweight Neutrogena lotions, and Peter Thomas Roth "Uber-Dry" really does go on dry, no grease or "sunscreen" smell – available here, and here

5. Big sunglasses. Also part of my sun-protection arsenal are giant shades. Not only for eye protection ... but they sorta scream movie star – $5.80, available at Forever 21

6. Sun hat. Sand, plus wind, plus water, don't exactly equal a great hair day  – $13.80, available at Forever 21

7. A good read for the flight and beach. Just because I'm on vacation, doesn't mean I'm abandoning my regularly scheduled Paris-daydream. David Lebovitz has a fantastic blog on Parisian food life and this wonderful book detailing his hilarious and delicious adventures – $11, available here

Black & Blocked

Chicago Style

cashmere sweater

The goods:
• black sheer sweater from H&M

• black denim by J Brand
• cap toe pumps from Zara
• bangles from Forever21, Coach, Barneys
• vintage bag from Kokorokoko

When introducing color into my ensembles (a New Year's resolution of mine), the easiest method is through accessories! This color block bag takes care of that in one fell swoop with it's bright – and totally 1980's – green, yellow and orange combination. While it may not go with everything (or much) it certainly adds a punch to a monochromatic outfit ... which is advised when sporting such an awesomely bright accent. It's a pretty fun piece, there's a similar one available here.
