Bon Weekend!

Bastille Day

Bon weekend! It's supposed to be a lovely weekend in Chicago. With no serious plans, we're looking forward to hanging with family and friends.

Also this weekend ...
• Monday is Bastille Day in France, but there are plenty of French fêtes around Chicago. Head to the French Market for a taste of France, or a serious French meal at Kiki's Bistro

• Sunday is the World Cup Finals and the games just get more and more exciting. The best way to watch is surrounded by futbol fans ... preferably on a patio with TVs like at Grandview or Smoke Daddy

• August isn't far off, which means Lollapalooza is coming up quick! If you didn't score tickets, dine at Quartino this weekend for a chance to win passes.

Have a great weekend!

Food, Fun, and Fireworks

After a relaxing holiday week (and unintentional hiatus from my little blog due to down interwebs) it's good to be back! I hope everyone had a lovely Fourth weekend ... ours was full of good food (my fave local BBQ and the largest micheladas in town!), quality friend and family time (over patriotic ice cream cake and beer), and of course, some fireworks (I wait all year for this show set to music). Well it's back to the grindstone, so here's to a fantastic week ahead.

Have a Perfect Summer Weekend!

Weekend Brunch

Happy weekend! Isn't it amazing that we get foggy/rainy/cool weekdays, but gorgeous weekends? If the forecast of 80 and sunny holds true, I'm hoping to finally grab brunch at The Dawson on their awesome patio (above) ... I just can't decide between the incredible salmon breakfast or decadent french toast ...

Also this weekend ...
• The 45th Annual Pride Parade kicks off in Uptown this Sunday. This day long event is always a fantastic time, full of fun loving people, definitely not to be missed!

• I'm a huge (huge) Beatles fan, so since I'll never fulfill my dream of seeing them live, I "settle" for the solo shows by Paul and Ringo. Ringo Starr and His All Star Band will take the stage at the Chicago Theater this Saturday – a perfect venue for this old Beatle.

• Another summer weekend, another fun summer festival! Lincoln Park Summerfest, to be specific, and this one has all the bells and whistles – BBQ, live music, beers in the park, and shopping. 80 and sunny out? Perfect.

Have a great weekend!

Have a Culture-Filled Weekend!

Art in the Village

Here's hoping the rain holds off this weekend so we can get out and do fun things! This is the first weekend in a while that we don't have any major plans so I'm looking forward to chilling and seeing where the days take me.

Also this weekend ...
• If you feel like taking a break from the bustling city summer festivals, head north to Winnetka for Art in the Village. This juried art show takes over part of Lincoln avenue Saturday and Sunday and includes amazing artists from all over (like Armando Pedroso, above). After you've absorbed all the art you can, pop in the cute shops or grab a bite at my fave little european cafe

• Head up to Winnetka Saturday, then check out the Green Music Fest Sunday. This 2-day eco-friendly focused fest has crafts, drinks and snacks – but most importantly, tunes. Check out my personal faves, The Features, Sunday night.

• Perhaps the most festive of festivals this weekend is Chicago Pridefest. The pride parade is still a week away, but the revelry starts this weekend with a huge celebration including food, drinks, and crafts – plus pop and dance performances. Talk about a serious summer kick off party!

Have a super weekend!

Summer Dessert: Strawberry Rhubarb Chiffon Pie

strawberry rhubarb

My mother in law recently gave me a big bunch of fresh rhubarb. I was thrilled, but also a little nervous – I've always loved the flavor, but never cooked or baked anything with it myself. After storing it in the fridge for a week while I mustered up the courage, I figured Father's Day was the perfect opportunity to take the plunge (plus rhubarb is one of my dad's faves, so there was no excuse). A traditional pie sounded too heavy (and incredibly daunting) so I opted for a light, no-bake strawberry rhubarb chiffon pie. Pie isn't really one of those things you can taste to make sure it's good, so I brought a backup dessert just in case, but it was a hit (and all gone in about 15 minutes)!

Strawberry Rhubarb Chiffon Pie

ingredients
1 premade graham cracker crust
1 package gelatin (I used strawberry, but may opt for plain next time so the flavor doesn't takeover)
1 C boiling water
2 tsp finely grated lemon peel
3 T lemon juice
1 C whipping cream (next time I'd like to swap this for plain or vanilla greek yogurt for a healthier take)
2 C strawberry rhubarb sauce (directions below)
whipped topping (I like Tru Whip, it's all natural and tastes great)

strawberry rhubarb sauce
3 C diced rhubarb (about 1/2 inch pieces)
3 C shopped strawberries
1 T lemon juice
1/3 C water
1/3 C sugar

directions - strawberry rhubarb sauce
in a sauce pan, heat sugar and water until sugar is dissolved. Add rhubarb, simmer for 15 min until pieces soften. Add strawberries and lemon juice and simmer for an additional 10 minutes until all combined. Allow to cool, then pulse mixture in blender until smooth. Set aside for now.

directions
• In a large bowl, combine gelatin with boiling water. Stir in lemon peel and lemon juice. Place bowl in a large bowl of ice water, stirring frequently until mix is partially set (kinda like the consistency of unbeaten egg whites) - about 10-15 min. Mine started to set a little more, but this was okay.

• In a medium bowl beat whipping cream with mixer on medium speed until soft peaks form (mine never got very thick, but this was alright. I think greek yogurt next time would work well, eliminating this step). Add cream and rhubarb sauce to gelatin mixture and mix together using a spatula. Cover and chill for 30-45 min until mixture thickens and mounds when spooned.

• Transfer mix to pie crust, cover and chill for at least 8 hours or until firm. Just before serving, spread whipped topping over top of pie if desired (slicing the pie is kind of fun, pieces are like whipped jello jigglers!)

Enjoy!

Mini Vaca

gone boating

After a wonderful whirlwind wedding weekend for my sister, some family members have decided to stick around for a reunion of sorts ... so we're off to the lake for a couple days to soak up some sun, catch up, and kick off the summer. Be back soon!

Have a Festive Weekend!

white wedding flowers

It's going to be another beautiful weekend in Chicago! I'm especially happy because my little sister gets married Saturday, so the more sun the better. I will be busy with celebrations, but there is lots to do around the city ...

Also this weekend ...
• Another weekend of summer festivals starts with Ribfest up at Lincoln and Damen. I love me some finger lickin' good ribs – mix that with good tunes and cold beers and you've got a fantastic fest.

• Head to U.S. Cellular Field for another fun fest – the Chicago Food Truck Fest. For one day, the parking lot fills with fab food on wheels (including one of my faves, Tamale Spaceship).

• Last but not least, Andersonville's Midsommarfest will take place this weekend. I love the neighborhood on any given day, but even better when the streets fill with music and munchies.

Have a great weekend!

Have a Super Spring Weekend!

Chicago Summer

I love when the weekend creeps up on you after a short week! It's supposed to be a gorgeous spring weekend here in Chicago, so perfect timing for festival season to start!

Also this weekend ...
• Kick this year off with Mayfest in Lincoln Square. I loved the food in Germany when Steve and I visited, so I can't wait to get myself a schnitzel and a beer.

• Maybe you're a little more fancy than a giant mug of beer – so grab a glass of wine at the Roscoe Village Wine Stroll. Taste a number of red or whites as you hop from shop to shop around the neighborhood (sounds like my kind of shopping spree).

Do Division is this weekend and like every good Chicago street festival, it's got sidewalk sales, live music, and all sorts of good eats and treats.

Have a great weekend!

Have a Great Loooong Weekend!

memorial day

Since Steve and I are heading out of town, I figured I'd kick off the holiday weekend early on the blog too. Since Memorial Day is the unofficial start to the summer, here's hoping we get nice enough weather to do some grilling (or at least find an patio so someone else can do the grilling while you kick back with a frosty beverage).

Also this weekend ...
Chicago Craft Beer Week continues through this weekend with dozens of venues offering special taps and tastings.

• Head to the Fashion Outlets of Chicago (err ... Rosemont) for their (pretty much) mall-wide sale going on this weekend. Most of the shops are still pretty pricey, but I can tell you the department stores (Bloomies outlet and Neimans) are pretty good bargain bets.

• Now that it's finally nice out, head to The Dawson on Grand and Halsted and check out their huge patio (seriously, there are tons of tables, an outdoor bar, a fireplace with couches, all the makings of an amazing outdoor area).

Have a fantastic holiday weekend!

Have a Lovely Weekend!

Mott Street Chicago

It's the last weekend before labor day (which is the unofficial end to summer – event hough the warm weather extends well into September), so get out there and enjoy the lovely days! I can't hardly wait for the Wakeup Your Makeup event this Saturday at Neiman Marcus, where they'll be unveiling the brand spankin' new beauty section of the store (and offering treatments and makeovers!).

Also this weekend ...
• Enjoy the sunny summer days with a cocktail outdoors. Have you been to Mott Street yet? They have a lovely deck outside and really, really yummy food (check out the above photo and tell me those spicy chicken wings don't look amazing!)

• Saturday and Sunday get your vintage fix at the Randolph Street Market. It's the usual amazingness ... vintage home goods, attire, and most important – the accessories.

• One of the best parts of Chicago summers? The street festivals! The Bash on Wabash is this weekend and it promises to be another spectacular event. Even better, there will be free workout classes (B.Y.O mat, of course).

Have an awesome weekend!

Have a Lovely Weekend!

Chicago air show

Here's to a gorgeous Chicago weekend ahead! Perfect for getting out and enjoying the Chicago Air & Water show. I hope to catch it from a sunny rooftop bar where we can avoid the crowds, while enjoying some food and cool drinks ... maybe here?

Also this weekend ...
• after the air show, stroll over to 900 N. Michigan to catch a sneak peek at local jewelry designer, Laura Lombardi's fall line of vintage-inspired goods this Saturday at Space519

• Hasana – purveyor of designer duds – is setting up a pop-up shop in Lakeview. All proceeds of the shop will fund educational programs for high school girls. Now that's some shame-free shopping!

• It's still a month away, but it's time to map out your plan of attack for the Phillip Lim X Target collab. There's so many goodies coming, I challenge you to limit your wish list (I know I'm working on editing mine down!)

Have a super weekend!

Gotta Run!

bon voyage

A little unexpected travel popped up, so have a magnificent weekend and I will be back next week!

Before I go, a couple amazing things to do this weekend ...
• The Fashion Outlets of Chicago open today! It's the closest outlet mall to the city of Chicago. This. Is. Huge.

• Join the music-loving masses at Lollapalooza this weekend. There's so many goodies, it would be hard to come up with my faves! (But I would definitely catch Mumford & Sons, The Killers, Ellie Goulding, and Lana Del Ray ... for starters)

Have a great weekend!

Coffee & Classics

Cars

Chicago sure lucked out with some nice weather this weekend, so we got out every chance we could. Before reveling with the masses at the Pride Parade, Steve and I checked out a much smaller event – Coffee & Classics up in Winnetka. The monthly event features beautiful vintage cars, and yesterday the event focused on Porsche. As the wife of a diehard Porsche enthusiast, I quickly fell in love with the stunning yet simple designs, so I couldn't resist snapping a few of my faves ...

Have a Great Weekend!

Chicago Weekend

It's supposed to be a rainy kick-off to summer here in Chicago – all the better to enjoy some good eats and indoor fun. Why not catch dinner and a movie (World War Z, The Bling Ring, Man of Steel all look good). And, of course, gotta catch the Hawks game Saturday night.

Now ... if the rain decides to give us a break, check out these happenings around town ...
• Head to Red Door Sunday for the Bucktown Bazaar. Shop clothing, accessories, stationary, beauty products and more.

• If you'd rather sip that shop, head to Old Town for the Chicago Craft Beer Festival to taste dozens of brewery specials from around the U.S. and enjoy some sweet tunes.

• One of my favorite things in summer is strolling the Farmers' Market to pick up fresh berries and pretty flowers. Here's a list of 5 Farmers' Markets to check out, complete with specialty items to look out for at each.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Father's Day Weekend!

Father's Day

Happy Father's Day weekend! If you're in need of a last minute gift for dad, snag a fun little gadget or some vintage auto art for his office, either way, I hope you're spending time with the main man in your life.

Some fun things to do with dad this weekend ...
• Head to the Taste of Randolph to enjoy bites from the best restaurants in town, listen to great tunes, even watch the Hawks game on a big screen!

• For a smaller crowd, take dad to Roots Pizza for good 'za, great beer, and of course, the game!

• If the weather doesn't cooperate (which seems to be the trend for our weekends), take dad golfing ... indoors. Play18 in the Loop is basically an indoor playground for men. With virtual simulators, pool tables, locker rooms, and a whiskey bar, it's pretty much everything he wants on his "holiday" in once spot.

Have a great weekend!

So Long Summer

The goods:
• blazer, pants, and ballet flats from Zara

• chambray shirt from J.Crew
• vintage watch and bracelets

What a difference a day makes! Only in Chicago do we enjoy a balmy summer day and plummet down to the 60s the next. In all honesty, I don't know that I was 100% ready to give up on my blazers just yet. I love true spring weather – warm enough where you don't need a coat and you can get away with a little jacket and flats. I will welcome the summer weather ... you know, in summer.

Back to Camp

Well only in Chicago do you get sunny skies teasing you while it snows, so let's focus on something brighter ... sweet, sweet summer. Nothing says summer like camping – but here's the thing about camping – set up is painful, tear-down is even worse, and the outhouses/spiders/fear-of-snapping-sticks-in-the-middle-of-the-night can be kind of awful. So I would jump at the chance to try out this vintage camp resort, sorta like sleepaway camp for adults! Camp Wandawega in Wisconsin is just that – with everything from canvas tents stocked with vintage Pendleton blankets, a cozy one room cabin overlooking the water, to glamorous touches like a magnificent antler chandelier in the Tree House. And it's just a short drive from Chicago ... sounds like a picture perfect summer weekend to me.

Chic in Chambray

The goods:
• chambray dress from Marshalls

• white shirt from Banana Republic
• sweater from Nordstrom
• necklace from Forever21
• platform booties by Report

I often dip into my summer dress collection to create winter ensembles. This chambray dress is great in warm weather with simple sandals and a hint of tan, but paired with warm tights and some added layers, it's a subtle nod to summer in the middle of winter weather. There's just something sweet and summery about chambray fabrics - maybe that's my subconscious reason for snapping up all the fun pieces I find.

Summer Dreamin'

When the windchill reads 5 below in Chicago, the only relief is to imagine you're someplace else, someplace hot. Photographer Gray Malin traveled the world, capturing the most beautiful sandy beaches, but from a new perspective. I just love how his aerial shots almost make these scenes look like model sets, when really there are lively bunches of people enjoying their day at the beach.
Now if only we could speed this winter business up a little bit.

Our Wedding: The Ceremony and Party

Wedding

Balena restaurant was the perfect spot for our non-traditional wedding. We wanted everyone to know how happy we were that they could be there to celebrate with us so we held our ceremony in the round. Our family surrounded us in a tight circle and our guests gathered around, making our large group feel intimate and special. Best of all, Steve's best friend officiated our ceremony, which meant the world to us.

Wedding

The gorgeous space was filled with candles, delicious food, vintage touches, and fantastic people. We invited our guests to sign our "guestbook", a beautiful piece I found on Etsy that will hang on our wall as a reminder of our evening.

Wedding

Our dessert table was filled with wonderful confections like lemon lavender shortbreads, candied blueberries, salted chocolate creameaux, and of course, some French macarons. Steve and I had a small cake made, a delicious concoction of lemon, ginger, blueberry and buttercream frosting (which also served as my breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the days that followed. Serious)

The night was an amazing blur of lovely friends, family, and fun times. Best of all, I got to walk away with a pretty sweet man to call my husband.

Oh, actually best of all, we had the Meatloaf Bakery food truck pull up in front for a midnight snack.
